Iran says four tankers caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz — US disputes the mine claim

In short

On October 30, 2026, Iran's armed forces and the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) said four tankers hit mines and caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz — three on an "unauthorized southern route" off Oman's coast, a fourth east of the strait. The claim came a day after the US military said it had cleared the strait's key routes of mines. UKMTO reported that one of the affected vessels was hit differently: a small boat attached explosive devices above the waterline, causing an engine-room fire — contradicting Iran's naval-mine account. The fire was extinguished and the crew was unharmed; CENTCOM insists the main transit routes are fully cleared.

Iran's armed forces and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on October 30 that four tankers caught fire within 24 hours after hitting mines in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the IRGC, three vessels exploded on an "unauthorized southern route" near the Omani coast — their crews, Iran says, had switched off AIS and radar and ignored IRGC navy warnings. Iran's army separately reported a fourth tanker that caught fire east of the strait, also after hitting a mine, in what it called a "restricted and dangerous area." The claim came a day after the US military said it had cleared the strait's key routes of mines; Iranian government spokesman Hossein Mohebi demanded "independent evidence, not statements" from Washington.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency (UKMTO) confirmed only part of the picture — and differently. It reported a vessel on fire about 25 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman: a small boat had attached two explosive devices above the waterline, causing an engine-room fire that was later extinguished with the crew safe. That account contradicts Iran's naval-mine version. UKMTO also reported a dhow that caught fire and sank, and a separate tanker struck by an unidentified projectile.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) maintains on social media that the strait's primary transit routes are fully cleared of mines, and says it has helped Gulf states export 1.5 billion barrels of oil through Hormuz since summer. For shipowners and cargo interests, the conflicting accounts leave one point clear: there is no independent confirmation of a mine threat on the route, but attacks on individual tankers are continuing — which is likely to keep war-risk premiums elevated.
