Los Angeles–Long Beach port strike pushed back to November 4

In short

On October 30 the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) and ILWU Local 26, representing about 250 port watchmen at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, agreed to extend talks to 5pm Pacific Time on Wednesday, November 4, replacing a strike that could have started Sunday, November 1. Talks continue with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) involved. PMA estimates that terminals where Local 26 works handle about 85% of Long Beach cargo and 33% of Los Angeles cargo.

The Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) and ILWU Local 26 — the union representing roughly 250 port watchmen at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach — agreed on October 30 to extend negotiations to 5pm Pacific Time on Wednesday, November 4. That pushes back a possible strike that could have started Sunday, November 1, when the current contract extension was due to expire. Talks continue with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) involved.

Watchmen control terminal gates and monitor cargo; PMA estimates that terminals where they work handle about 85% of cargo at the Port of Long Beach and 33% at the Port of Los Angeles — meaning their position determines whether other ILWU members, who are expected not to cross picket lines, would also stop working. PMA said it "remains committed to reaching a fair agreement at the bargaining table."

Sources differ on the exact new deadline: PMA, Dimerco and gCaptain cite 5pm Pacific on November 4, while a Reuters report carried by local radio stations such as WSAU cites November 5. As of publication, no new agreement has been signed and no strike has been called.
