The Port of Los Angeles handled 1,042,652 TEUs in September 2026 — the busiest month in its 118-year history, more than 20,000 TEUs above the previous record set in July 2025. Loaded imports rose 19% year over year to 545,696 TEUs, while loaded exports rose 10% to 125,751 TEUs. Empty container volume also set a record, at 371,206 TEUs, the highest monthly total in the port's history.

The July–September quarter was the busiest in the port's history, at nearly 3 million TEUs. Year to date, from January through September, the port handled almost 8.1 million TEUs — more than 3% ahead of the same period in 2025.

Executive Director Gene Seroka credits consumer demand, inventory replenishment, and cargo shifting to Los Angeles as shippers navigate problems on other trade routes; lower tariffs and Panama Canal restrictions were cited as well. Still, the National Retail Federation's September forecast expects import volumes to ease in October and November.
